G’Day!
My name is Vanessa and I am an Australian civil engineer currently on a working holiday in London. Despite my rather unoriginal career moves, I am original and interesting – I promise.
I laugh at a different time to everyone else in the movies, I often fall asleep with my reading light still on and I really hate those mini corns people put in a stir-fry.
The title of this blog comes from the lyrics to a Vegemite jingle:
We’re happy little vegemites as bright as bright can be
We all enjoy our vegemite for breakfast, lunch, and tea
Our mother says we’re growing stronger every single week
Because we love our vegemite
We all adore our vegemite
It puts a rose in every cheeeek!
V- train!
I miss you already. Have many funny photos of shoes in extraordinary positions for you. Check your email!
Lots of Love,
Robbo
Those mini-corns are not food, Vanessa. Distrust anyone who tells you otherwise.
We don’t know each other yet, but I just read your comment at A Curious Singularity and can’t tell what day it was posted.
I don’t speak for the host of the blog, but I am a contributor and you can read my post there under the title “The 2-Ton Elephant in the Room.”
Like you, I think the elephant is a metaphor for the Big Unmentionable Problem in the relationship.
Anyway, the protocol for A Curious Singularity is to comment to individual discussion posts. You can ask to “join” the blog as a contributing member and Kate will add you. You’re clearly a discerning reader and strong commenter, so I can’t imagine your being denied.
Does this help?
Well VJ,
Today I completed my mission to visit every cricket ground in Australia, by going to Hobart to see the one day game against New Zealand. There are no prizes for guessing who won- our local lad, Cameron White does us proud.
Hope the credit card is not too ill before you leave HK – it is harder to cure than chest infections!
Love Mum x
Well another first for Vanessa’s Mum, sending her birthday greetings via a blog- certainly not something that was around in 1981 when you were born on a hot friday afternoon in Queen Victoria hospital, Melbourne. So happy birthday on the 3-0 day my love. Mum.
Hello Ness
For someone who is so busy I have no idea how you manage to keep this blog so up to date! Great to see you over the weekend, even though Music & Lyrics was not the “choicest” movie ever. Will have to do it again some time!

Well our team for the World Series Cup has been announced today and maybe us Australian cricket fans will have to gear ourselves up for a few more losses!! I think the Australian selectors could have asked us fans for a few ideas!!!
Mum
As your local reporter from the World Series Cup in the West Indies, I can report first hand that the Opening Ceremony in Montego Bay ( or Mo. Bay) was fabulous – real carribbean style entertainment, with a small cameo appearance of the players. The 16 teams marched in under their banners and it would seem there was about 3 Australians in the crowd of 10,000 but we managed to cheer and be heard. Did forget to bring a flag which was a big oversight!
Then onto the opening game in Kingston; WI versus Pakistan, which proved to be an easy win for WI. The highlight for me was hearing and seeing the Jamaican supporters in action – they cheered at any and all actions and usually beat the umpire to determine the 4 and 6’s.
Certainly not like a MCG crowd in terms of numbers and organisation but a great cultural experience. We could have done with the ‘freemantle doctor” though in the afternoon, as the humidity was a challenge in itself.
Also an interesting experience to watch an international cricket game and your team was not on the field.
Also got to see some the first game for the Aussie team on the TV – given that they were playing on another island. A good start by our boys, but a long way to go yet.
I will have to make do with the final 8 games on the abc radio at home, but that will be fine as our commnetators do a fine job for us.
from your cricket loving Mum
Decided that I needed to check in on our cricket lads in West Indies, so aftercoming home from the ‘G’ ie to those “not in the know”, the Melbourne Cricket Ground, last night from seeing Collingwood beat Richmond in round 3 of the AFL season, I stayed up to watch the Ireland game live.
Given that the game was over in less than a total of 50 overs, it meant that bed-time was just after 3am. However it was great to see the lads in action, especially Mr Cricket showing a return to form with the bat.
Of course this early morning viewing is good training, should Australia make the finals – it is live on free to air TV, starting at 11.45pm on a Sat evening, Melbourne time
This has certainly been one long cricket tournament

Mother’s Day when neither of your two children are in Melbourne, Australia on the actual day is certainly different, but do-able!
I hiked( ie drove down) down to Rosebud to take my own mother out for afternoon tea. But what a hightlight this evening to recieve a phone call from Vaenssa’s good mate Emma Searle, who was thinking of me knowing that my own daughter was on the other side of the world. Thanks Emma it was a gift of a very special kind.
However I also enjoyed telehone calls from children too.
Hey Vanessa – have never read anyone’s blog before – you’re my first! Sounds like London is JUST big enough for you! Am trying to keep an eye on RJB in your absence, but struggling to keep up with her. I’m not likely to log on very often, but will do my best to keep your counter ticking over. Cheers
Colleen
2012 Logo for London Olympics did not get great press in Aussie land either, however we have easily been distracted from that, by the excitement of having rain and a good start to the ski scene due to the cold weather. Any form of rain continues to make the headlines.
Have 2 movies to recommend – the Swedish film ‘as it is in heaven’ and the french movie ‘my best friend’.
Tonights MTC play was The Pillowman – not easy to describe, certainly different
enjoy your cousins’ concert next week
Hi VJ
Just letting you know that I have seen Rixy in action at the G in true footy weather yesterday, cold and rain – wonderful. Luckily Collingwood won, ( due of course to the loud cheering of myself and ‘Aunty Di’ )but good to see Rixy in there with his St Kilda mates.
love Mum
Well Vanessa,
All I can say is that you have started to let me down… no new blogs since your return from experiencing the best that the NHS has to offer. Disappointing! Enjoyed last weekends pizza night with the girls, will definitely have to do something of similar ilk in the near future!
